Alexey Rakov, MD, PhD, Senior Researcher

* I was born in a country that do not exist anymore (Soviet Union or USSR).

* I did my postgraduate studies at Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology in the laboratory of Prof. Shubin.

* I got my Ph.D. degree from the same Institute, where I worked in Shubin's Lab on molecular epidemiology of Salmonella and Salmonella genetics of plasmids.

* I did my first postdoctoral work with Prof. D. Ashley Robinson at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (previously at the New York Medical College), working on population genetics of Streptococcus pneumoniae.

* I did my second postdoctoral work with Prof. Shu-Lin Liu at the Harbin Medical University, working on Salmonella and Escherichia coli genomics.

* I did my third postdoctoral work with Prof. Dieter Schifferli at the University of Pennsylvania, working on Salmonella genomics.

* My current interests are molecular microbiology, epidemiology, pathogenesis, evolution of bacterial infectious diseases, phylogenetics and phylogenomics, microbial diversity, microbial genetics, metagenomics, and comparative genomics using bioinformatics.

* Despite severe lack of funding from the institution, I am widely-recognized as one of the best Salmonella researcher in Russia.

* Highly skilled senior professional with extensive academic (20 years) experience in molecular microbiology and epidemiology, excellent analytical and communication skills.

* Performed molecular cloning, ELISA, bacterial cultures, mammalian cell cultures and banking; analyzed gene expression by RT-PCR, qPCR, Western blotting; analyzed DNA by sequencing, MLST, MLVA, PFGE, RFLP, PCR, plasmid profiles, etc.

* Designed pipelines and workflows for genome assembling, annotation, analysis of pangenome, metagenome, resistome, plasmidome, etc.

* Authored 40 peer-review papers, more than 50 meeting abstracts, 2 manuals, and 10 registered databases (See Publications)

* In my spare time I practice guitar playing, hiking, book reading.

* Research in the lab revolves around the idea that a greater understanding of clonal organization will provide novel insights into host-pathogen interactions. This information will help us develop effective tools for diagnosing infectious diseases and help us design therapeutic strategies that favor quality outcomes for infected hosts. Salmonella infections can cause severe forms, and studying this system provides an excellent opportunity to understand: 1) clonal organization of genus Salmonella; 2) how virulent bacteria can cause extraintestinal Salmonella infection; 3) the correlations between plasmid profile and clinical manifestation of Salmonella infection; 4) the role of virulence plasmids in pathogenicity and clinics of infections caused by pathogens like Salmonella and Yersinia.
