Dr. Alexey Rakov received a medical graduation from the
Vladivostok State Medical University, where he received therapeutical speciality.
He defined the correlation between plasmid profile of Salmonella enteritidis
and clinical manifestation of Salmonella infection to earn his M.D. and Ph.D. at
Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology of Siberian Branch of
Russian Academy of Medical Sciences in the lab of Dr. Felix Shubin (Laboratory of Molecular Epidemiology).
Also he carried out the research of corellation between presence of virulence plasmids in
Salmonella enteritidis and clinical manifestation of Salmonella infection.
Research in Dr. Rakov's lab revolves around the idea that a greater understanding of clonal organization will provide novel insights into host-pathogen interactions. This information will help us develop effective tools for diagnosing infectious diseases and help us design therapeutic strategies that favor quality outcomes for infected hosts. Salmonella infections can cause severe forms, and studying this system provides an excellent opportunity to understand: 1) clonal organization of genus Salmonella; 2) how virulent bacteria can cause extraintestinal Salmonella infection; 3) the correlations between plasmid profile and clinical manifestation of Salmonella infection; 4) the role of virulence plasmids in pathogenicity and clinics of infections caused by pathogens like Salmonella and Yersinia. In the course of these studies, the Rakov's lab uses techniques in molecular epidemiology, microbiology, and molecular biology (Salmonella monitoring, plasmid profile analysis, PCR, RAPD, PFGE etc.).
Searching opportunities for collaboration, grants, fellowships, trainings, schools, conferences on medical microbiology, molecular epidemiology, molecular biology, infectious diseases, etc.
